JAWBONE UP24 REVIEW
Updated November 8, 2014
Jawbone released the Jawbone UP24 in November 2013. Like the original Jawbone UP, the UP24 is a durable and flexible wristband that offers activity tracking, food tracking, a sedentary alarm, social features, and sleep tracking that's a shade more detailed than competitors. The new features in the UP24 include wireless syncing for real-time insights, retroactive sleep detection, and slightly smoothed bracelet edges. Curious to know how the latest Jawbone UP Move that was released in fall 2014 compares? Check out that review here >
Jawbone UP24 Overview
Like the Jawbone UP, the Jawbone UP24 is meant to be worn 24/7 (even in the shower, though not in the pool). It tracks your activity - including steps and intensity of activity - throughout the day, and tracks your sleep (including deep sleep vs light sleep) throughout the night.
The biggest breakthrough for the new UP24 over the original UP is that it allows you to sync wirelessly for realtime data. Jawbone is renowned for their wireless communication devices that syncs with smartphones. So it only makes sense that they would leverage this sweet spot in their newest fitness device. It's hard to believe they didn't include it in their first version of the UP, and that they've included it in their newest product shows they've been listening to what consumers want.
The other major update is the version 3.0 app update. Thanks to this update, the UP will provide more real-time feedback, insights, and encouragement than any other leading tracker. The app has always served up info tidbits and praise: it periodically provides encouragement and information about your daily patterns in the form of "insights" that pop up. Examples include information about your outstanding steps achieved on a previous weekend, and encouragement to push beyond that this weekend, or praise for getting lots of deep sleep over the course of the week along with a link to research findings about the benefits of deep sleep.
However, with the latest update, you'll also be alerted when you've had successful "streaks" of maintaining a good habit/reaching your goal for several days in a row, along with encouragement to keep it up. You'll also receive what Jawbone calls "Today I Will" Insights that will use your data to suggest unique goals based on your daily patterns that you can then choose to pursue or not (and if you do, the app will cheer-lead you on). You'll also be notified when you reach milestones. I personally have found these types of messages to be cheerful and motivating.
